About Sammy Taylor
Samuel Douglas Taylor played a season of Class D ball in 1950, then served in the Navy during the Korean War before the Milwaukee Braves signed him as a 23-year-old free agent in 1956. Traded to the Chicago Cubs that December, he debuted on April 20, 1958. A left-handed-hitting catcher, Taylor became a Cubs mainstay through 1962, his best year coming in 1959 when he hit .269 with 13 home runs and 43 RBI — the same season he found himself at the center of a bizarre two-baseballs-in-play mix-up with Stan Musial. His 1960 Topps card catches him behind the plate for Chicago in a season his average slipped to .207. He went on to catch for the Mets, Reds and Indians before his final game in August 1963, finishing with a .245 average, 33 home runs and 309 hits over six major-league seasons. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
