About Glen Hobbie

Glen Hobbie, a right-hander out of Witt, Illinois, climbed from Class D ball to the majors in barely two years, joining the Cubs in September 1957 after Chicago purchased his contract from Memphis of the Southern Association for $50,000. He became the club's workhorse just as this 1960 Topps card caught him, following his second straight 16-win season while tying for the National League lead with 20 losses. His finest outing came April 21, 1959, when he carried a perfect game into the seventh at Wrigley Field before Stan Musial's line-drive double broke it up in a 1-0 one-hitter over the Cardinals. A shoulder injury traced to the Cubs' experimental 1961 "College of Coaches" training regimen sapped his fastball, and on June 2, 1964, Chicago dealt him to St. Louis for Lew Burdette. Hobbie made his final big-league appearance that July with the eventual World Series champion Cardinals, closing an eight-year career at 62-81 with a 4.20 ERA and 682 strikeouts over 284 games, all but 13 of them in a Cubs uniform.
