1960 Topps #86 Dick Gernert

About Dick Gernert
Dick Gernert broke into the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1952, a 23-year-old first baseman out of Temple University signed by scout Charlie Wagner after starring for the semipro Kentville Wildcats in Nova Scotia. A right-handed power hitter, he hit 19 home runs as a rookie and 21 in 1953, tying Mickey Mantle for seventh in the American League. Hepatitis cost him 40 pounds in 1954-55, but he rebuilt his strength in Louisville and came back to hit a career-best .291 in 1956, often filling in for an injured Ted Williams. On November 21, 1959, Boston sent him to the Cubs for Jim Marshall and Dave Hillman — baseball's first interleague trade made without waivers — putting Gernert in Chicago blue for this 1960 Topps card. Sold to Detroit that August, then to Cincinnati in 1961, he helped the Reds win the NL pennant as a reserve, batting .302, and closed an 11-year career with 103 homers and 402 RBIs before a long run scouting for the Mets.
