About Dick Ellsworth
Dick Ellsworth signed with the Chicago Cubs for a reported $70,000 bonus one day after graduating from Fresno High School in 1958, choosing Chicago over a competing offer from the Phillies. The tall left-hander debuted in the majors that June, spent the rest of 1958 and all of 1959 in the minors, and returned to Chicago for good in 1960 — the season captured on this Sport Magazine Rookie Star card, one of the key rookie cards in the 1960 Topps set. Ellsworth's signature year came in 1963: after a rough 9-20 season, he rebounded to go 22-10 with a 2.10 ERA, winning National League Comeback Player of the Year and becoming one of only a handful of pitchers since 1920 to follow a 20-loss campaign with a 20-win one. He made the 1964 NL All-Star team before later pitching for the Phillies, Red Sox, Indians, and Brewers, finishing with a 115-137 record. He died in Fresno in 2022, age 82.
