About Bob Will
Robert Lee Will was born July 15, 1931, in Berwyn, Illinois, and starred at Morton High School before playing college ball at Northwestern University and Mankato State Teachers College, graduating in 1955. The left-handed hitting outfielder signed with the Chicago Cubs organization in 1954 and hit .333 across six minor-league seasons, culminating in a 1959 season as the Triple-A American Association's Most Valuable Player, when he batted .336 and led the league in hits (203) and runs (101). That breakout earned him a spot in Topps' 1960 Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset (#117-148), even though he'd already debuted with the Cubs in 1957. Will made good on the promise in 1960, becoming Chicago's regular right fielder and hitting .255 with 53 RBIs over 138 games — the only season of his six with the Cubs (1957-58, 1960-63) in which he wasn't primarily a pinch-hitter. He finished his career with a .247 average in 410 games. Will died August 11, 2011, in Woodstock, Illinois.
