About Don Elston
Don Elston's 1960 Topps card, #233, catches him with the Chicago Cubs, where he pitched all but one inning of his nine-year career. The right-hander from Campbellstown, Ohio signed with the Cubs in 1947 and debuted on September 17, 1953, the same day as future Hall of Famer Ernie Banks. After parts of two seasons in the minors and a brief 1957 stop with Brooklyn, he settled into Chicago's bullpen, and teammates dubbed him "Every Day" Elston for how often the phone rang for him. He led the majors with 69 appearances in 1958, then tied for the league lead with 65 in 1959, a season that brought a career-high 10 wins, 14 saves and his only All-Star selection; he earned a save in the first of that year's two All-Star Games at Forbes Field. He finished his nine seasons 49-54 with a 3.69 ERA and 64 saves in 450 games, retiring after 1964.
