About Del Rice
Del Rice signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1941, discovered by scout Frank Rickey, brother of Cardinals GM Branch Rickey. He debuted in 1945 and, though a weak hitter, built a 17-year big-league career on sharp defense and a rapport with pitchers, stepping behind the plate that rookie season when St. Louis sold star catcher Walker Cooper to the Giants. Rice caught all three of Harry Brecheen's wins in the 1946 World Series as the Cardinals beat the Red Sox in seven games, and made the 1953 All-Star team. Traded to Milwaukee in 1955, he became Bob Buhl's personal catcher and won a second championship in the 1957 World Series over the Yankees. His 1960 Topps card catches him mid-shuffle: released by the Braves that spring, he caught 18 games for the Cubs — including Don Cardwell's May 15 no-hitter — before trades sent him through St. Louis, Baltimore, and the expansion Los Angeles Angels. He later won Minor League Manager of the Year in 1971 and managed the 1972 Angels.
