About Earl Wilson
Earl Wilson's 1960 Topps card, #249, is his recognized rookie card, catching him with the Boston Red Sox the year after he debuted on July 28, 1959, as the franchise's first Black pitcher. A converted catcher out of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, and Hammond Colored High School, Wilson had signed with Boston back in 1953 before military service delayed his arrival. On June 26, 1962, at Fenway Park he no-hit the Los Angeles Angels 2-0 and homered off Bo Belinsky in the same game, becoming the first Black pitcher to throw a no-hitter in American League history. Traded to Detroit in mid-1966, Wilson led the AL with 22 wins in 1967 and started Game 3 of the 1968 World Series as the Tigers beat St. Louis in seven games. He closed his career with San Diego in 1970, finishing 121-109 with a 3.69 ERA, and ranks among the era's best-hitting pitchers with 35 career home runs. Wilson died in 2005 at 70.
