About Pete Runnels
James Edward "Pete" Runnels picked up his nickname as a boy in Lufkin, Texas, where his family called him "Little Pete" after his father, and it stuck for life. A Marine veteran who signed with the Washington Senators in 1951 after climbing from Class D ball in Chickasha, Oklahoma, he debuted that July and spent seven seasons as Washington's steadiest infielder before a 1958 trade sent him to Boston. There, tutored by teammate Ted Williams, Runnels blossomed into one of the American League's toughest outs, winning batting titles in 1960 (.320) and 1962 (.326) and just missing a third crown to Williams himself on the final day of 1958. This 1960 Topps card, #15 in the set, catches him mid-title chase with the Red Sox, for whom he manned first, second, and short with equal ease — twice leading the league in fielding percentage. A five-time All-Star, he finished his career with a .291 average and 1,854 hits, later managing Boston's final 16 games of 1966. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2004.
