About Ernie Broglio
Ernie Broglio broke into pro ball with the independent Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League in 1953, then joined the New York Giants' system in 1956, winning 17 games in each of his last two minor-league seasons. St. Louis acquired him in an October 1958 five-player trade with the Giants, and he debuted for the Cardinals on April 11, 1959. This 1960 card catches him on the rise: that year he went 21-9, led the National League in wins, finished third in Cy Young voting, and won the NL Sophomore of the Year award. He followed with an 18-win 1963 season. On June 15, 1964, St. Louis traded Broglio to the Chicago Cubs for outfielder Lou Brock — a deal that looked even at the time but became one of baseball's most lopsided, as Brock starred on two Cardinals championship clubs and reached Cooperstown while arm trouble limited Broglio to seven more big-league wins before his 1966 finish. He closed his career 77-74 with a 3.74 ERA over eight seasons.
