1960 Topps #17 Johnny Callison

About Johnny Callison
Signed by the White Sox out of East Bakersfield High School in 1957, Johnny Callison hit .340 with 17 homers in his first pro season at Class-C Bakersfield, then led the American Association in home runs at Triple-A Indianapolis before debuting in Chicago in September 1958. Traded to the Phillies for Gene Freese that December, he arrived in Philadelphia for 1960, the year of this card, and spent the next decade as the club's right fielder, making four All-Star teams (1962, 1964, 1965). His signature moment came in the 1964 All-Star Game at Shea Stadium, where his two-out, three-run walk-off homer off Dick Radatz won it for the National League, 7-4 -- only the third walk-off in All-Star history -- and earned him game MVP honors. That season he also finished runner-up for the NL MVP award as the Phillies suffered their infamous late-season collapse. He led the league in triples twice, doubles once, and outfield assists four straight years, and hit for the cycle against Pittsburgh in 1963. After stops with the Cubs and Yankees, he retired with 226 home runs and a .264 average, later joining the Phillies Wall of Fame.
