About Jack Meyer
Jack Meyer broke in with the Phillies in 1955 and turned in an outstanding rookie season, leading the National League in saves (16) and games finished (36) while fanning 97 in 110⅓ innings out of the bullpen — good enough for runner-up honors in the NL Rookie of the Year vote behind Bill Virdon. A hard-throwing Philadelphia native out of Penn Charter School, he'd won the Phillies' "Mr. Fastball" pitching contest in 1949 before signing with the club in 1951. Meyer settled in as Philadelphia's closer through the late 1950s, firing from an unusual crouched "gorilla stance," but arm trouble and a reputation for carousing as part of the Phillies' notorious "Dalton Gang" cut into his effectiveness. A drunken clubhouse scuffle in May 1960 left him with a ruptured disc that ended his season; he pitched just one more game, in 1961, before retiring at 29. His 1960 Topps card (#64) shows him with the Phillies that year. Meyer died of a heart attack in 1967, only 34.
