About Eddie Sawyer
Edwin Milby Sawyer, a Cornell-trained biologist who taught school in the off-season, took over the Phillies on July 26, 1948, promoted from the club's Triple-A Toronto affiliate. A former Yankees farm outfielder whose own career stalled after a shoulder injury, he patiently blended untested youngsters — Robin Roberts, Richie Ashburn, Del Ennis, Curt Simmons — with holdover veterans, and in 1950 rode Dick Sisler's pennant-winning tenth-inning homer to the Phillies' first NL flag since 1915. The "Whiz Kids" were swept by the Yankees in the World Series, but Sawyer was voted the Associated Press' Manager of the Year. Philadelphia never had another winning season under him; he was fired in 1952, brought back in 1958 for a last-place encore, and resigned after the 1960 opener, telling reporters: "I'm 49 years old and I want to live to be 50." His 1960 Topps card (#226) appears in the set's manager subset (#212–227), capturing him in his final year running the Phillies dugout. Ashburn called him "the best manager I ever played for."
