About Dick Farrell
Richard "Turk" Farrell inherited his nickname from his father, an amateur athlete known as "Big Turk"; at 6-foot-4, Dick simply became Turk. A Boston native who overcame childhood polio to star at St. Mary's High School, he signed with the Phillies in 1953 and reached the majors in September 1956. His 1957 rookie season made an immediate mark: 10 wins and 10 saves out of the bullpen, good enough to earn a spot on the Baseball Writers' Rookie All-Star team alongside teammate Jack Sanford. On this 1960 Topps card he's shown mid-career with the Phillies, still working primarily in relief before an early-1961 trade sent him to the Dodgers. Houston selected him in the 1961 expansion draft, and as a Colt .45s starter he made the All-Star team in 1962 despite a rough 10-20 record, then again in 1964 and 1965. He finished his 14-year career, split between Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Houston, at 106-111 with 1,177 strikeouts and five All-Star selections. Farrell died in a 1977 car accident in England at age 43.
