About Dick Schofield
John Richard "Ducky" Schofield was born January 7, 1935, in Springfield, Illinois, and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in June 1953 as the franchise's first bonus baby, debuting at age 18 that July. The nickname came from his father, John "Ducky" Schofield, tagged as a boy for the ducks he watched near Linwood, Pennsylvania; Cardinals teammates pinned it on the rookie right away. Traded to Pittsburgh on June 15, 1958, Schofield spent years behind Dick Groat before his signature month: after Groat's wrist was broken by a Lew Burdette pitch on September 6, 1960, Schofield hit .403 the rest of the way to help clinch the pennant, then earned a World Series ring, though Groat's return limited him to pinch-hitting. He won the shortstop job for good in 1963–65, made history as the first batter to appear at Shea Stadium in 1964, then played through 1971 across seven teams — a career that stretched into a fourth baseball generation through his son Dick Jr. and grandson Jayson Werth.
