About Hal Smith
Harold Wayne Smith signed with the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1949 but never played for them, landing with the Baltimore Orioles in a 17-player trade after the 1954 season and debuting as Baltimore's Opening Day catcher on April 11, 1955. Traded to the Kansas City Athletics in 1956, he hit .303 in 1957 splitting time between catcher and third base. Dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates in December 1959, Smith platooned behind the plate with Smoky Burgess during Pittsburgh's 1960 pennant-winning season, batting .295 with 11 home runs. His 1960 Topps card #48 catches him mid-season, months before he entered Game Seven of the World Series in the eighth inning and drove a three-run home run off Jim Coates that gave the Pirates a 9-7 lead — a blast overshadowed one inning later by Bill Mazeroski's Series-winning homer, but still remembered as one of the era's most dramatic near-misses. Smith later caught Houston's first major-league game in 1962 and finished his ten-year career in 1964 with Cincinnati, retiring with a .267 average and 58 home runs over 879 games.
