About Roman Mejias
Román Mejías signed out of the Cuban countryside in 1953, discovered by Pirates scout and Hall of Famer George Sisler. He debuted as Pittsburgh's Opening Day right fielder in 1955, ahead of rookie roommate Roberto Clemente, who soon claimed the job for good; Mejías spent the rest of the decade shuttling between the Pirates and their top farm clubs, batting .275 in 1957 and clubbing three homers in one game at San Francisco's Seals Stadium in 1958. His 1960 Topps card — which, like Pittsburgh's own records, lists his birth year several years too young — catches him still fighting for outfield time; he played only three games for the pennant-winning 1960 club before a roster cut sent him to Columbus, and a broken wrist later cost him a spot on the World Series roster. Mejías finally became an everyday player in 1962 with the expansion Houston Colt .45s, homering twice on Opening Day and leading the club in batting (.286), homers (24) and RBIs (76). He also starred in Cuban winter ball, pacing the league in hits for champion Cienfuegos in 1959-60, and was later inducted into the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in exile.
