About Joe Adcock
Joseph Wilbur Adcock was born October 30, 1927, in Coushatta, Louisiana, and first played organized baseball at LSU. Signed by the Cincinnati Reds, he found the first-base job blocked by Ted Kluszewski and was dealt to the Milwaukee Braves in 1953, where he blossomed into one of the National League's most feared sluggers. On April 29, 1953, he hit the first ball into the Polo Grounds' revamped center-field bleachers, and on July 31, 1954, he crushed four home runs and a double against Brooklyn at Ebbets Field, setting a major-league record of 18 total bases that stood until 2002. A two-time All-Star, Adcock helped the Braves win back-to-back pennants and the 1957 World Series alongside Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews. His nickname, "Billy Joe," borrowed from a Vanderbilt basketball star, was popularized by broadcaster Vin Scully. Card #3 in the 1960 Topps set catches him mid-career with Milwaukee, still years from his final total of 336 home runs. Adcock later managed Cleveland and was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in 2022; he died in 1999 in his native Coushatta.
