1960 Topps #230 Mound Magicians
On this card: Lew Burdette, Warren Spahn, Bob Buhl

About this card
This is one of the eleven combo cards scattered through the 1960 Topps set, each pairing two or three players under a nickname headline rather than giving one man his own card.
The players on this card
"Mound Magicians" paired three arms who made the Milwaukee Braves' rotation the National League's best for most of the decade. In 1959 Warren Spahn and Lew Burdette shared the NL lead with 21 wins apiece — Spahn logging 292 innings at age 38, Burdette 289.2 — while Bob Buhl, back from a season of arm trouble, went 15-9 with a sparkling 2.86 ERA over 198 innings. The trio carried Milwaukee to a first-place tie with the Dodgers, but the Braves lost both games of the best-of-three NL tie-breaker series that September, ending their bid for a third straight pennant. Burdette, the 1957 World Series MVP after winning three complete games against the Yankees, appears as Lou on this card's back, the spelling he used himself. Spahn, the winningest lefty in history, reached Cooperstown in 1973.
