About Chuck Dressen
Charles "Chuck" Dressen broke into pro ball with the 1919 Moline Plowboys, later playing quarterback for the football team that became the Chicago Bears before settling into baseball full-time. He reached the majors as an infielder with the Cincinnati Reds (1925-1931) and New York Giants (1933), batting .272 with 603 hits over eight big-league seasons and winning a World Series ring with the 1933 Giants. Dressen managed the Reds from 1934-1937, then coached under Larry MacPhail and Leo Durocher in Brooklyn before taking over the Dodgers in 1951, driving the "Boys of Summer" - Robinson, Reese, Snider, Campanella and Hodges - to back-to-back National League pennants in 1952 and 1953. He later managed Washington (1955-1957) before Topps pictured him on card #213 of its 1960 manager subset (#212-227), the year he took the reins of the Milwaukee Braves. Dressen closed his career with two stints in Detroit (1963-1966), finishing 1,008-973 overall. He died in 1966, never inducted into the Hall of Fame.
