About Jimmie Dykes

Jimmie Dykes broke into pro ball with Gettysburg of the Class D Blue Ridge League before Connie Mack brought him to the Philadelphia Athletics in 1918. A versatile infielder who settled at third base, he anchored Mack's powerhouse lineup alongside future Hall of Famers Al Simmons, Jimmie Foxx and Mickey Cochrane, batting over .300 five times and helping the A's capture three straight pennants (1929-31) and consecutive World Series titles, hitting .421 in the 1929 Series. Sold to the White Sox in 1932, he became Chicago's player-manager in 1934 and ran the club through 1946, finishing as the winningest manager in franchise history with 899 victories, though his teams never rose above third place. Later stops included the Athletics, Orioles and Reds before Detroit hired him in May 1959 after firing Bill Norman; Dykes led the Tigers to a 74-63 finish that year, then was traded to Cleveland for manager Joe Gordon in 1960. This 1960 Topps #214 catches him mid-tenure with Detroit, part of the set's manager subset.
