1960 Topps #245 Eddie Yost

About Eddie Yost
Eddie Yost broke into the majors as a 17-year-old in 1944, signing with the Washington Senators out of New York University without playing a game in the minors. After a year in the Navy, he anchored Washington's infield from 1946 to 1958, developing into one of the era's best defensive third basemen and its most patient hitter. Nicknamed "The Walking Man" for his gift for drawing walks, he led the American League in bases on balls six times and finished with 1,614 for his career, 11th all-time -- ahead of Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Stan Musial, and Hank Aaron. He made the 1952 All-Star team and once played in 829 consecutive games (1949-55), the ninth-longest streak in major-league history. Traded to Detroit before the 1959 season to clear room for prospect Harmon Killebrew, Yost thrived in hitter-friendly Tiger Stadium, setting a career-best 21 home runs while again leading the league in runs, walks, and on-base percentage -- the form that carried him onto card #245 of the 1960 Topps set as a Tiger. He closed his playing career with the expansion Los Angeles Angels, then coached third base for 23 seasons, including for the 1969 champion "Miracle Mets."
