About Pete Burnside
Peter Willits Burnside broke in with the New York Giants in September 1955, a Dartmouth-educated left-hander whose blazing fastball had Hall of Fame farm director Carl Hubbell calling him "the most promising pitcher in the chain." Signed out of high school with an agreement letting him finish his degree between minor-league seasons, Burnside spent years working through injuries and control problems in the Giants system before reaching the majors for good in 1957. Acquired by Detroit for 1959, he worked out of the Tigers' bullpen that year, then earned a rotation spot in 1960 — the season pictured on this card — and posted a career-high seven wins. Washington took him in the expansion draft that fall. He pitched through 1963 with the Senators and Orioles, finishing 19-36 with 303 strikeouts over eight big-league seasons, then closed his playing career with two years for the Hanshin Tigers in Japan before returning to Illinois to teach and coach at his alma mater, New Trier High School.
