About Lou Berberet
Lou Berberet left Santa Clara, where he'd enrolled on a football scholarship, to sign with the New York Yankees in 1949 for a $21,000 bonus. A left-handed-hitting catcher, he debuted with New York in 1954 but was blocked by Yogi Berra and traded to Washington in 1956. Over parts of seven big-league seasons with the Yankees, Senators, Red Sox and Tigers, he built a reputation as an outstanding defensive catcher, handling 397 chances without an error in 1957 — then just the third such season in major-league history — and stringing together 441 consecutive errorless chances. Dealt to Detroit for 1959, he set career highs with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs, then opened his final season, 1960 — the year pictured on this Topps card — with a bases-loaded home run off future Hall of Famer Early Wynn, his fourth career homer against him. Berberet retired that winter at 30 to sell beverages, finishing with a .992 career fielding percentage, then coached American Legion ball in Long Beach.
