About Ray Narleski
A hard-throwing right-hander out of Camden, New Jersey, and son of former Red Sox infielder Bill Narleski, Ray Narleski broke in with the 1954 Cleveland Indians, pairing with left-hander Don Mossi to form one of the majors' first true relief-pitching tandems. Working almost exclusively in relief, he helped Cleveland to a then-record 111-43 season and pitched four scoreless innings in the World Series, striking out Giants pinch-hitting star Dusty Rhodes. He led all of baseball with 19 saves in 1955, made the AL All-Star team in 1956 and 1958, and threw 3⅓ scoreless innings of relief in the '58 All-Star Game as the AL won, 4-3. Moved into Cleveland's rotation as its aces aged, he went 11-5 with 16 saves in 1957. Traded to Detroit with Mossi that November for Billy Martin, he was hampered by a sore shoulder in 1959 and never pitched in the majors again after a ruptured disc required surgery — meaning this 1960 Topps card found him already done for the season it depicts. He finished 43-33 with 454 strikeouts and 58 saves.
