1960 Topps #201 Larry Osborne

About Larry Osborne
Larry Sidney Osborne, better known as Bobo Osborne, signed with the Detroit Tigers out of Atlanta's West Fulton High School in 1953, bypassing a football scholarship to Auburn. A left-handed first baseman and third baseman, he reached the majors in 1957 and played six seasons split between Detroit (1957-59, 1961-62) and the Washington Senators (1963), totaling 17 home runs, 86 RBI and a .206 average in 359 games. This 1960 Topps card, #201, caught him after a .191 season as Detroit's backup first baseman; that summer he was optioned to Triple-A Denver, where he had his finest season, batting .342 with 34 home runs and 119 RBI to capture the American Association Triple Crown, edging future Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski for the batting crown by three points. Traded to Washington for Wayne Comer in 1963, he held down first base for the Senators before retiring from the majors, then scouted for decades — principally the San Francisco Giants — earning a World Series ring shortly before his 2011 death.
