About Tom Morgan
Tom Morgan's 1960 Topps card, #33, pictures him with the Detroit Tigers, the club he pitched for from 1958 into 1960. Morgan signed with the Yankees as an amateur free agent before the 1949 season and debuted on April 20, 1951. The 6-foot-2 right-hander started and relieved for New York through 1956, missing 1953 to military service, and earned World Series rings with the Yankees in 1951, 1952, and 1956. On June 30, 1954, he tied a major-league record by hitting three Boston Red Sox batters in one inning. Dealt to Kansas City for 1957, he joined Detroit in 1958 before finishing 1960 with Washington. Teammates called him "Plowboy," a nod to his day job farming in native El Monte, California. He closed his career with the expansion Los Angeles Angels (1961-63), teaming with Art Fowler in a bullpen that posted a 2.57 ERA over 1961-62. As Angels pitching coach in 1972, Morgan reworked a young Nolan Ryan's mechanics, a fix Ryan credited on his path to Cooperstown.
