About Rocky Bridges
Everett Lamar "Rocky" Bridges signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization as an amateur free agent in 1947, then picked up his enduring nickname the next year at Class-A Greenville, where someone — he told the story different ways over the years — decided the young infielder simply looked like a "Rocky." A sure-handed but light-hitting utility man, he spent parts of 11 big-league seasons (1951-1961) at shortstop, second, and third base for seven teams, backing up Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson in Brooklyn before settling in as Washington's regular shortstop. His finest year came in 1958, when he hit .263 for the Senators and was picked as their lone representative on the AL All-Star squad. The Senators traded him to Detroit that December, and this 1960 Topps card catches him as a Tiger — he was dealt to Cleveland that July 26 for catcher Hank Foiles, one stop in a well-traveled career that later stretched into 21 seasons as a minor-league manager. Better remembered for his tobacco-cheeked grin and dugout one-liners than his .247 career average, Bridges remained one of baseball's most quoted characters long after he retired.
