About Al Kaline
Albert William Kaline broke into the majors as an 18-year-old bonus baby, signing with Detroit for $15,000 out of Baltimore's Southern High School and debuting June 25, 1953 — he never played a single minor-league game. By 1955 he had won the American League batting title at .340, the youngest man ever to do so. Over a 22-season career spent entirely with the Tigers, he earned the nickname "Mr. Tiger" for that rare one-franchise loyalty and made 18 All-Star teams, won ten Gold Gloves for his right-field defense and rifle arm, and finished with 3,007 hits and 399 home runs. His only World Series came in 1968, when he hit .379 with two homers and eight RBIs to help Detroit beat St. Louis in seven games. He reached 3,000 hits with a double off Baltimore's Dave McNally in September 1974 and retired weeks later. Kaline was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1980 on the first ballot, drawing 88.3% of the vote. His 1960 Topps card #50 catches him already a batting champion and fixture on the All-Star roster; card #561, a short-printed high number, places him in the Sport Magazine '60 All-Star Selection subset.
