About Wally Moon

Wallace Wade Moon signed out of Texas A&M for a $6,000 bonus and broke in with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954, taking over in the outfield for the traded Enos Slaughter and homering in his first big-league at-bat. He beat out Ernie Banks and Hank Aaron for National League Rookie of the Year. A left-handed hitter nicknamed "Booger" since childhood, for his fear of the booger man, Moon made two All-Star teams (1957, 1959) in five seasons with St. Louis before a trade sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Gino Cimoli in 1958. In Los Angeles he adjusted his swing to lift fly balls over the short, high left-field screen at the Coliseum, and the press dubbed the results "Moon shots." He helped the Dodgers win the 1959 World Series in his first year there, won a Gold Glove in 1960, and added championships in 1963 and 1965. Card #5 in the 1960 Topps set shows him in Dodger blue during that run — a career .289 hitter who finished with 142 home runs over 12 seasons.
