About Walt Alston

Walter Alston's own major-league playing career lasted one game: filling in at first base for Johnny Mize with the 1936 St. Louis Cardinals, he struck out in his only at-bat. He spent 13 seasons in the minors as a player and player-manager, hitting .295 with 176 home runs, and in 1946 led the integrated Nashua Dodgers -- with Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe in the lineup -- to a New England League title. After running Brooklyn's top farm clubs, the St. Paul Saints and Montreal Royals, Alston was promoted to manage the Dodgers in 1954, the first of 23 consecutive one-year contracts he signed with the club. In his second season he led Brooklyn to its only World Series title, in 1955, and went on to win seven NL pennants and four World Series (1955, 1959, 1963, 1965) across 23 seasons spanning the franchise's move to Los Angeles. Nicknamed "Smokey" in his youth for the speed of his fastball, the reserved Alston earned six Manager of the Year honors and had his No. 24 retired by the Dodgers. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1983. Card #212 opens Topps' 1960 manager subset with Alston fresh off guiding the champion Dodgers.
