1960 Topps #211 Taylor Phillips

About Taylor Phillips
William Taylor Phillips broke into pro ball with the Waycross Bears of the Class D Georgia-Florida League in 1951, then starred for the Atlanta Crackers, where a Crackers pitcher was already named Taylor — teammates shortened Phillips to "T," with "Bone" tacked on soon after, and the nickname "T-Bone" stuck. A two-year Army hitch included a 21-0 season at Fort McPherson before the left-hander reached the Milwaukee Braves on June 8, 1956, striking out Willie Mays in his major-league debut. His 5-3, 2.26 ERA rookie year brought a unanimous Rookie of the Year vote from Milwaukee writers and a spot on The Sporting News All-Rookie team, and in 1957 he was part of the Braves' World Series championship club, though he did not pitch in the Series. Traded to the Cubs that December and on to the Phillies in May 1959, Phillips pitched mostly in relief across the two Philadelphia seasons pictured on this card, closing out his six-year major-league career in 1963 with the White Sox at 16-22, 4.82 ERA, and 233 strikeouts.
