About Jim Owens

Jim Owens, a hard-throwing right-hander nicknamed "Bear" for his stocky build and round face, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies out of Bradford, Pennsylvania, in 1951 and tore through the minors, striking out 302 batters in a Class D season and earning International League Rookie of the Year honors at Triple-A Syracuse in 1954. Touted as the "next Robin Roberts," Owens debuted with the Phillies in 1955 but lost two seasons to military service before breaking through in 1959, going 12-12 with a 3.21 ERA and 135 strikeouts for a last-place club, capped by his only career shutout, a six-hitter over the Pirates. His 1960 Topps card, #185, catches him fresh off that season, still with the Phillies before a trade to Cincinnati and a Rule 5 pickup by Houston closed out his career as an Astros reliever and later their pitching coach. Off the field, Owens ran with the Phillies' hard-living "Dalton Gang," alongside roommate Turk Farrell.
