About Frank Herrera
Juan Francisco Herrera Villavicencio was born June 16, 1934, in Santiago de las Vegas, Cuba, and broke into pro ball with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League before the Phillies purchased his contract in 1954. Known as "Pancho" — the standard nickname for Francisco — he became a feared minor-league slugger, winning the International League's Triple Crown and MVP award with the 1959 Buffalo Bisons (.329, 37 home runs, 128 RBIs). He arrived for good in 1960, the season shown on this Sport Magazine Rookie Star card, sliding from second base to first and finishing runner-up to Frank Howard for NL Rookie of the Year despite setting a league record with 136 strikeouts. Herrera hit 17 homers that year and 13 more in 1961 before Roy Sievers took over first base, closing his big-league line at .271 with 264 hits and 31 home runs over 300 games. He played on into the 1970s across the minors, Mexico, and winter ball, later managing, and was inducted into the International League Hall of Fame in 2008. He died in 2005.
