About Bobby Gene Smith
Bobby Gene Smith broke into the majors on April 16, 1957, homering in his major-league debut for the St. Louis Cardinals. A right-handed-hitting outfielder from Hood River, Oregon, he spent parts of seven seasons (1957–1965) with the Cardinals, Phillies, Cubs, Mets and Angels, finishing with a .243 average, 234 hits and 13 home runs over 476 games. His best season came in 1960, his first with the Phillies pictured on this card, when he set career highs across the board — 62 hits, 4 home runs, 27 RBI and a .286 average — as Philadelphia's semi-regular left fielder. Smith was also an original Met, selected 32nd overall in the 1961 expansion draft, though a trade sent him back to St. Louis within weeks of the 1962 season. Because three different Bob Smiths pitched or played in the majors in the late 1950s, writers routinely used his full name, Bobby Gene Smith, to keep him straight from the others.
