About Dick Hyde
Richard Elde Hyde signed with Washington out of Champaign Central High School and spent three seasons in Class D ball before military service interrupted his climb. In spring training 1954, Senators president Calvin Griffith watched Hyde's sidearm delivery and told him to drop lower - the tip turned him into a genuine submarine pitcher, and by 1957 he'd earned a permanent spot in Washington's bullpen. His 1958 season was one of the era's best relief campaigns: a 10-3 record, 1.75 ERA and 19 saves in 53 games, tying Ryne Duren for the AL lead and trailing only Pittsburgh's Roy Face across baseball. The BBWAA named him AL Sophomore of the Year over Brooks Robinson and Tony Kubek, and he placed 12th in MVP voting. Raised in Rising, Illinois, his athletic reputation earned him the nickname "The Mayor of Rising." This 1960 card catches Hyde in his final season as a Senator - Washington sold his contract to Baltimore's organization that July, and he closed his career with the 1961 Orioles.
