About Hal Griggs
Harold Lloyd Griggs, named for the silent-film star, was working as a Miami bellhop when a minor-league owner talked the 21-year-old into a tryout, and though he had never played organized ball, he made the 1950 Hickory Rebels as a pitcher. The Shannon, Georgia native climbed steadily through Washington's farm system, leading the Western Carolina League in strikeouts in 1952 and earning Southern Association All-Star honors with Chattanooga in both 1955 and 1957. Along the way he married his wife, Betty, on the pitcher's mound before a 1952 game, cracking, "I couldn't hit, so there was no sense getting married at home plate." The right-hander reached Washington in 1956 and stuck through 1959, going 6-26 with a 5.50 ERA across 105 games. His signature afternoon came September 24, 1957, when he ended Ted Williams' 16-game reached-base streak with a first-inning groundout, only to lose 2-1 on a Williams homer. His final big-league win, a 7-0 shutout at Yankee Stadium on May 9, 1959, included five strikeouts, Mickey Mantle among them.
