About Bubba Phillips

John Melvin "Bubba" Phillips carried a childhood nickname from his brother into a Mississippi sports career that started on the gridiron. A Little All-American cornerback and running back at Mississippi Southern College, he set a school record with 25 career interceptions and turned down the San Francisco 49ers to sign with the Detroit Tigers organization in 1948. After two years in the Army, he debuted with Detroit in 1955 and was traded to the White Sox for Virgil Trucks. Phillips became Chicago's regular third baseman, starting at four different positions for the pennant-winning 1959 "Go-Go" White Sox and batting .300 in that World Series. That winter's trade sent him to Cleveland, the club shown on his 1960 Topps card, where he broke out in 1961 with 18 home runs, two grand slams, and a league-leading 188 putouts at third. He closed his 10-year career (.255, 62 HR, 356 RBI) back in Detroit in 1964 and was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1972.
