1960 Topps #228 Ernie Johnson

About Ernie Johnson
Ernie Johnson's 1960 Topps card, #228, pictures him with the Cleveland Indians, a club he never pitched for. Released by Baltimore after the 1959 season, the 35-year-old right-hander signed with Cleveland, but arm trouble that spring led the club to offer a minor-league assignment; he chose retirement instead, making this his only card in an Indians uniform. A 6-foot-3 Vermonter, he signed with the Boston Braves in 1942 after a celebrated high school stretch of near-no-hitters, then served with the Marines at Okinawa before debuting in the majors in 1950. Johnson spent most of his career in relief for the Braves, becoming a bullpen mainstay after the franchise moved to Milwaukee in 1953, and helped the club win the 1957 World Series, throwing seven scoreless innings across three appearances save for a game-deciding Hank Bauer homer in Game Six. He finished 40-23 with a 3.77 ERA in 273 games. Johnson went on to a 32-year run as the Atlanta Braves' broadcaster, inducted into the club's Hall of Fame in 2001.
