About Don Dillard
Don Dillard, an outfielder and pinch-hit specialist, was born in Greenville, South Carolina, and signed with Cleveland out of Taylors High School in 1955 after a bidding war for the region's top prospect. He debuted April 24, 1959, but spent his first two seasons mostly at Triple-A behind a stacked outfield of Minnie Minoso, Rocky Colavito, Jim Piersall, and Tito Francona -- the wait his 1960 Topps card, part of the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset, captured. Dillard stuck for good in 1961, hitting .272 with career highs of seven homers and 17 RBI. His signature moment came July 4, 1962: a walk-off grand slam off Detroit's Jerry Casale, followed the next day by a walk-off homer during a six-game Cleveland streak. Traded to Milwaukee for Joe Adcock, he gained a disputed home run in the same August 1965 game that saw Hank Aaron robbed of one. Dillard retired in 1967 with a .244 career average and ran a fishing resort on Lake Greenwood for decades after.
