About Jim Grant
Jim "Mudcat" Grant signed with Cleveland out of Daytona Beach in 1954, discovered by Indians scout Fred Merkle after leaving Florida A&M to support his family. The nickname stuck at his first minor-league camp, when an instructor mistook the Florida native for a Mississippian and began calling him "Mudcat" -- a name so lasting that his 1960 Topps card (#14), from his Cleveland years, still lists him under his given name, Jim Grant. He debuted for Cleveland on April 17, 1958, winning a complete game over Kansas City, and won 67 games in parts of seven seasons there before a 1964 trade sent him to Minnesota. There he had the year of his career: 21-7 in 1965, leading the AL in wins, winning percentage, and shutouts, and becoming the first Black pitcher to win 20 games in an AL season. He beat the Dodgers twice that October, including a Game Six complete game in which he also hit a three-run homer -- only the second by an AL pitcher in Series history -- forcing a Game Seven. A two-time All-Star and Sporting News AL Pitcher of the Year, Grant finished 145-119 in 14 seasons and later authored "The Black Aces" on Black pitchers' 20-win seasons.
