About Camilo Carreon
Signed by the White Sox in 1956, Camilo "Cam" Carreon climbed steadily through Chicago's farm system, batting .311 for Triple-A Indianapolis in 1959 and winning the American Association's Robert E. Hoey Award as its top rookie. He debuted with the White Sox on the final day of their 1959 pennant-winning season and took over as Chicago's regular catcher in 1962, sharing the job for years with veteran Sherm Lollar. On August 15, 1961, his two-run single off Whitey Ford snapped the Yankees ace's 14-game winning streak. Carreon hit a career-best .274 in 1963, but a shoulder injury in 1964 led to trades to Cleveland and then Baltimore, where his career ended in 1966 with a .264 average. His 1960 Topps card, #121, is a recognized rookie issue from the Sport Magazine Rookie Star subset (#117-148). Carreon later coached the Tucson Toros and was posthumously inducted into the Colton Hall of Fame in 2006, its first Hispanic honoree; his son Mark reached the majors six days after Cam's 1987 death.
