1960 Topps #116 Jim Rivera

About Jim Rivera
Jim Rivera's road to the majors ran through five years in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, where his play on the prison ballclub caught the eye of Atlanta Crackers owner Earl Mann, who helped secure his 1949 parole and signed him on release. Raised in Spanish Harlem, the Puerto Rican-heritage outfielder climbed through the minors — winning pennants at Gainesville and Pensacola, then earning 1951 Pacific Coast League MVP honors with Seattle — before debuting with the St. Louis Browns in 1952 and joining the Chicago White Sox that July. Over the next decade, "Jungle Jim" — a nickname coined by Chicago Sun-Times writer Edgar Munzel in 1953 for his daredevil sliding and all-out hustle — became a fan favorite and sparkplug of the "Go-Go" White Sox, leading the American League in triples in 1953 and stolen bases in 1955, and helping Chicago capture its first pennant since 1919 in 1959. He closed his ten-year career with Kansas City in 1961 at a .256 average with 83 homers and 160 steals. This 1960 Topps card, #116, captures him mid-pennant-run with the club.
