About Dick Donovan

Richard Edward Donovan was born December 7, 1927, in Boston, the youngest of five children of Jeremiah and Gertrude Donovan. He played shortstop, not pitcher, at North Quincy High School, and after three years in the U.S. Navy he signed with his hometown Boston Braves and broke into pro ball in 1947. Donovan struggled through parts of four seasons with Boston and a brief 1954 stop in Detroit before learning a slider at Triple-A Atlanta, earning a spot in the Chicago White Sox rotation in 1955 -- an All-Star season in which he went 15-9. He led the American League in winning percentage (.727) in 1957 and helped anchor Chicago's staff, alongside Early Wynn and Billy Pierce, during the 1959 pennant run, starting Game 3 and earning the save in Game 5 of that year's World Series against the Dodgers. This 1960 Topps card, #199, captures him in his final season on the South Side before Washington took him in the expansion draft; he led the AL with a 2.40 ERA for the 1961 Senators and won a career-high 20 games for Cleveland in 1962, finishing with 122 wins over 15 major-league seasons. He died in 1997 in Weymouth, Massachusetts.
