About Luis Aparicio
Luis Ernesto Aparicio Montiel, born April 29, 1934, in Maracaibo, Venezuela, signed with the White Sox in 1954 on the recommendation of fellow Venezuelan shortstop Chico Carrasquel and debuted April 17, 1956. He won the AL Rookie of the Year award that season, the first Latin American player so honored, and paired with second baseman Nellie Fox to anchor the "Go-Go" White Sox infield, helping Chicago to its first pennant in 40 years in 1959, when his 56 stolen bases were more than double any other player's total. Nicknamed "Little Louie" for his slight, 5-foot-9 frame, he led the AL in stolen bases nine straight seasons to open his career and won nine Gold Gloves at shortstop. Traded to Baltimore for 1963, he helped the Orioles win the 1966 World Series before returning to Chicago and closing his 18-year career with Boston in 1973, retiring with major-league shortstop records for games, assists and double plays, a .262 average, 2,677 hits and 506 steals. He appears twice in the 1960 Topps set, on his Chicago base card and the Sport Magazine '60 All-Star Selection subset card, both in the scarce short-printed high-number series. Aparicio entered the Hall of Fame in 1984, the first Venezuelan player enshrined.
