1960 Topps #239 Joe Shipley

About Joe Shipley
Joseph Clark Shipley's 1960 Topps card, #239, shows him with the Giants at Seals Stadium, a year after his 1959 Topps rookie card, whose back needled the same flaw: wildness. A 6-foot-4 right-hander from Morristown, Tennessee, who threw two no-hitters as a high school senior, he signed with New York Giants scout Dale Alexander in 1953 and spent eight seasons in the system, leading the Class D Kitty League with 174 strikeouts at Mayfield in a breakout 1955. He debuted for San Francisco on July 14, 1958, and worked almost exclusively in relief through 1960; his only major-league start came in a June 14, 1959 doubleheader against Philadelphia. Sold that winter, he drifted through several organizations until a standout 1963 at Triple-A Indianapolis (15-7, 2.83, International League All-Star) earned a recall to the White Sox, where he took his only major-league decision, a loss at Boston. He finished 0-1, 5.93 in 29 games. Giants manager Felipe Alou later joked that a Shipley fastball once sailed over the Seals Stadium screen and hit a fan. A skilled sketch artist, Shipley went on to coach baseball at East Tennessee State (1966-77) and entered the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
