About Danny Kravitz

Danny Kravitz signed with the Pirates out of rural Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, after a 1949 tryout camp and broke into pro ball as an outfielder, once driving in 102 runs at Class D Mayfield. Pittsburgh general manager Branch Rickey converted him to catcher in 1954, and Kravitz debuted on Opening Day 1956 at the Polo Grounds. On May 11 he delivered his first major-league home run — a walk-off grand slam off Jack Meyer that beat the Phillies, 6-5, after Pittsburgh trailed by three. A left-handed-hitting reserve behind Smoky Burgess and Hal Smith, Kravitz spent parts of five seasons in the majors, batting .236 with 10 homers and 54 RBIs in 215 games for the Pirates and Athletics. His 1960 Topps card, #238, catches him as a Pirate for the last time: he was traded to the Kansas City Athletics that spring and missed Pittsburgh's World Series title by months, though teammates voted him a $250 share of their winning pot. He retired from pro ball in 1963.
