About Elmer Valo
Born Imrich Valo in Rybník, Czechoslovakia, on March 5, 1921, he came to Palmerton, Pennsylvania at age six when his family emigrated to work in the zinc mines. He signed with the Philadelphia Athletics, playing for Federalsburg and Wilmington before debuting in the majors on September 22, 1940, at 19. Valo spent 20 seasons as a right fielder and pinch hitter, mostly with the Athletics through their move to Kansas City, hitting .300 or better five times and topping out at .364 in 1955. He finished with a .282 average, 58 home runs, and 601 RBI in 1,806 games, drawing enough walks to retire with a .398 OBP and major-league records for career and single-season pinch-hit walks. On May 1, 1949, he became the first player to hit two bases-loaded triples in a game, and he hit for the cycle on August 2, 1950. Card #237 catches him in 1960, his only season as a Yankee, late in a career that touched six organizations. He later scouted for the Phillies for 13 years and was inducted into the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame in 1990.
