About Tony Kubek

Anthony Christopher Kubek signed with the Yankees out of Milwaukee's Bay View High School for a $1,500 bonus in 1954, scouted by Lou Maguolo, and reached the majors on April 20, 1957. The left-handed-hitting shortstop won American League Rookie of the Year that season, then homered twice with four RBI in Game 3 of the World Series against his hometown Braves at Milwaukee, one of a handful of rookies ever to hit two homers in a Series game. Over nine seasons with New York, minus most of 1962 in military service, Kubek anchored the infield alongside double-play partner Bobby Richardson, made four All-Star teams, and helped the club to seven pennants and three championships (1958, 1961-62). His 38 doubles in 1961 stood as the franchise's shortstop record until 2004. A bad-hop grounder struck him in the throat in Game 7 of the 1960 Series, opening the door for Pittsburgh's Bill Mazeroski walk-off homer. A back injury forced his retirement at 30; he went on to a 24-year NBC broadcasting career, earning the Ford C. Frick Award in 2009 and induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016. His 1960 Topps card, #83, shows him mid-career with the Yankees.
