About Hal Smith
Harold Raymond Smith broke in with the Cardinals on May 2, 1956, and quickly took over as St. Louis's regular catcher, a job he held into 1961. A right-handed hitter with a rifle arm, he made the National League All-Star team in 1957 and 1959, and twice led NL catchers in catching would-be base stealers, nailing 52 percent of runners in 1960. Card #84 catches him in that prime, backstopping a Cardinals staff that included Vinegar Bend Mizell, his close friend and Florissant, Missouri carpool partner. Smith could hit good pitching, too — he batted .364 lifetime against Sandy Koufax, including a grand slam. His playing days ended abruptly on June 10, 1961, when a coronary artery condition forced his retirement just after his 30th birthday, clearing the way for Tim McCarver to take over behind the plate. Smith later coached for the Pirates, Reds and Brewers, and made a brief four-game emergency return with Pittsburgh in 1965. Tim McCarver ranked him among the greatest defensive catchers in Cardinals history.
